Starting A Home Based Business

Part One

By Jill Mowser

How many of us would love to have our own business, but just don't know how to go about it? How do you know what is the right home business for you? How do you come up with good ideas? Here is some help to get you on the right track to starting your own home-based business, doing something you love!

The first thing you need is an idea. So, how do you know when you've got a good idea? Or how do you come up with ideas at all? A good place to start is to think of things you enjoy - hobbies, sports, helping others…Make a list of things you are passionate about. If you are doing something you enjoy, there is a much higher chance you will be successful!

Now that you have a list of things you could get excited about, start thinking about needs in these areas. Is there a recurring problem in any of these activities? Is there a better way to do something? For example, maybe you find your feet just get so sweaty and sore after a long run. Is there a product that might help? Usually if you are experiencing a difficulty, others are as well! New products that solve a problem can be a great home-based business. Maybe you can think of a service that people would use that isn't currently available. You could also create a twist on something that is currently offered.

For other sources of ideas you can also check your local library. Ask for books about business ideas. There are many books written that discuss home-based business ideas. Let everyone know that you are looking for an at-home business. You will probably get a lot of not-so-great suggestions, but you might also find the one idea that suits you!

Here are some questions you can ask yourself to check if you have found the right idea for your business:

  • Is my idea something I would enjoy?
  • Do my friends think it is a good idea?
  • Do I have the support of my spouse and/or extended family if I choose to pursue my idea?
  • Is my idea something I can honestly do on a part-time basis (if you are not planning to hire full-time child care)?

If you answer yes to these questions, then it is time to explore your idea further. A good place to get some helpful feedback and a good start on a business plan is your local business center. Most large cities have offices where entrepreneurs can go to seek free advice and help in starting a business. There's a good chance that there is a group helping women specifically to achieve their business goals in your area. Check your phone book, the internet or government offices to locate this type of help. Once you have found one resource, chances are, they will know where you can find any other resource you need.

With the right idea and help from expert coaches, you CAN have a great home-based business!
