How to Build a Website With Quality Content

By Jill Mowser

Creating a website that people will want to visit again and again is never quick or easy. In order for your website to get the kind of traffic you want, and many repeat visitors, you need to include quality content. So, what is quality content? Basically, it is anything that visitors will find helpful, interesting or even amusing. You will want to keep adding to your content on a regular basis, so there's always something new and exciting for visitors.

Quality content must be unique to your website. Therefore, quality content is not anything taken from other websites, or from books, magazines or any source other than you. That is not to say that you cannot quote other people, or use articles from other sources with permission, but the majority of your content must unique.

Here are some ideas to help you brainstorm the types of quality content that will most suit your website.

  1. Run a contest. You could have a contest where visitors submit their artwork, photos, recipes, or anything related to your website's content.
  2. Create a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions). Write your own FAQ with questions related to your website. Keep adding to it as you get new questions.
  3. Write articles with topics related to your website's main purpose. For example, if you are selling Christmas decorations, write an article about Christmas traditions, or including Christmas recipes. If you don't think you are a very good writer, keep practicing! The more you do it, the better you will get!
  4. Include various tips, such as how-to guides. People love to get helpful information for free that they otherwise might have to pay for. If you can provide that kind of information, your visitors will want to return to your site again and again, as well as recommend it to others.
  5. Review products that are related to your website. If your website is about home decorating, read and review home decorating books, or other products that are related.
  6. Include a photo gallery or video clips as are relevant. Remember to take your own photographs, and shoot your own video so as not to infringe on copyrights.
  7. Write a blog. Your blog should be related to your website's content, but here is where you can get creative and add more of a personal touch. Simply writing a journal entry once a week is a great way to add quality content to your website.

Those are just a few ideas to get you started. Try to imagine what kinds of things your visitors would love to find on your website. What sorts of things would they want to keep coming back for? Remember to try to cover as many bases as possible. You'll want something for the do-it-yourselfer, something for the shop-a-holic, something for the parents, etc. Try to imagine who all of your potential customers might be.

Don't fret if your first articles, product reviews, or sets of tips aren't as good as you'd like. The main thing is to hone your skills and keep adding content to your website. Revise and review your current content and add some more. Your website will keep getting better and better - satisfying more and more visitors! And satisfied, repeat visitors who recommend your site are exactly what you want!
