Create Your Own Work Space
By Jill Mowser
How many of us find that it is very difficult to work from home because of all the noise, distractions and clutter around? Even if your house is immaculate, you probably find that you have way too many distractions that keep you from your most productive work. A helpful solution to this problem is to create your own work space.
Creating your own work space doesn't have to be costly or difficult. It can be as simple as setting aside a corner in your dining room. The emphasis is on setting aside that particular space ONLY for work. You need to designate a space just for work that you and the rest of your family will respect. Your children need to understand that the space is "Mommy's work" and they are not to play there, or get into anything there. And you need to have the same respect for your work space. When you have decided that it is your official office, you will be more likely to actually work when you are in it.
Here are some helpful hints for organizing an effective work space:
- 1. Set up your work space with all of the tools you need to be efficient and organized. These might include an inbox and outbox for your bills, and other papers that need to be dealt with. An inbox/outbox will help you to make sure nothing gets lost or forgotten. Make sure you have a filing cabinet or briefcase, and plenty of folders properly labeled. Purchase drawer organizers and a trash can so you have everything handy. The less often you have to get up from your work space, the less likely you will be distracted by household chores, etc.
- 2. Purchase a notebook to jot things in, such as notes while you talk on the phone, or to brainstorm business ideas. Your notebook can be your catch-all for any important information that you will need to remember or use in the future. Make sure you date your entries!
- 3. Consider putting a few healthy snacks and a water bottle in your desk drawer. These will also keep you focused on your work, rather than wandering to the kitchen to see what there is to eat!
- 4. Use your computer's e-mail program (such as Outlook) to set reminders of important dates, appointments, or regularly scheduled events. If you have a computer, you may as well use it to help you stay organized so you don't have to try to remember everything yourself.
- 5. Consider wants vs. needs. If you have an older desk, but it is still functional, then consider putting off buying a new one. Don't spend too much money on creating the most beautiful home office space - rather make sure you spend just enough to create a functional space. You can splurge on style later when your business is going great guns!
- 6. Add some personal touches to make your work space enjoyable and calming, rather than stressful. Consider eliminating as much noise as possible. Outside noises can be distracting, not to mention aggravating, whether we realize it or not. Add some live plants to add some oxygen and a calming "natural" effect to your work space. Place inspiring pictures around to help improve your mood.
Creating your own personal work space will help you improve productivity and meet your business goals. It is a crucial step to enjoying the greatest possible success with your home business.
